THE SCHOOL

Vana Vani situated in the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, was founded on 8th July 1963 as a primary school with 52 pupils. Today it has grown and developed into a fullfledged Matriculation Higher Secondary School with above 1000 boys and girls on the rolls.

The school is run by the IIT Madras Educational Trust and is managed by a Committee comprising of the Chairman, the Secretary - cum - Treasurer, the Principal, an Educationist of repute and parent representatives.

“The school is operated by a Trust, namely, the IIT Madras Educational Trust consisting of the following Trustees - Director (IITM) as Managing Trustee, Registrar (IITM) as Secretary, Dean (Academic Courses) and Dean (Administration) as members. The Trust is a non-profit organisation registered under the Registrar of Societies, Tamil Nadu. For directing the school operations, the Trust appoints a Managing Committee (MC), members of which are appointed for a three-year period. The present MC appointees are Prof. A Gopala Krishna (Chairman), Smt. M. Sindhu (Secretary-Cum-Treasurer), Mrs. Princy Tom (Principal Incharge), Smt. Revathy Parameswaran (External Member), Dr. Sivakumar P (Member, Parent representative from Group A Faculty), Shri K Vijayakumar (Member, Parent representative from Group B employees), Smt P Ranjani (Member, Parent representative from Group C employees), Mrs. P. Devi (Member, Parent representative), and Shri Narayanaperumal K (Member, Engineering Unit of IITM). All the members of the MC(except principal) are honorary - no remuneration or monetary benefits are attached to these positions.

The entire expenditure for the school’s operation including staff salaries and operational costs is met through the school’s internal revenue generation (through school fees & donations). IIT Madras does not provide any financial grant to the school.”

THE CURRICULUM

The school prepares its students for the Tamilnadu Board Examination at the end of std. X and std. XII

The school is co-educational with English as the medium of instruction for all classes. Tamil is the first language and is compulsory for all classes.

    SCHOOL FACILITIES

    The school is spread over an area of about 7 acres of land in the I.I.T Campus which was originally a deer park and is one of the greenest campuses in the city. The school houses four different sections the Primary, Middle school, High and Higher secondary school.

    Primary Section
    The new primary block which is one of the prized possessions of vana vani was inaugurated in 2012. The design of this block meets the international standards set aside for schools. Wide corridors, spacious classrooms with comfortable furniture suitable for children are few of the facilities available in this block. They also have a large library filled with books to quench the thirst of knowledge of the little ones. A music room, an art room, a computer lab and math lab to meet the various extra curricular activities set by the school is also available. The building also has an auditorium which can accommodate more than 200 people. The primary block is one of the best green buildings in the school.

    Library
    The school was a well equipped library with a wide variety of books to cater to the needs and taste of children and adults alike. This is one of the main resources centre for the faculty and students. A well stocked library with over 10,000 volumes mainly comprising of textbooks, reference books, fiction, audio-visual material like CD’s & VCD’s.

    The library also has periodicals and subscribes to nearly 12 periodicals including 02 national daily newspapers. The total worth of the books in the library is estimated to be nearly 10 lacs. The seating capacity of the library is 50.

    Laboratory
    Well designed and spacious science labs, which any school can be proud of is equipped to meet the curriculum requirements of various classes. The physics, chemistry, biology and computer science labs can accommodate fifty students at a time, where each child is free to handle the equipments individually. The state-of-art-computer labs have forty systems with broadband internet connection on most of them for easy access to educational website. The school offers computer education for students from Standard III to XII. The computer lab also has an LCD projector.

    Physical Education
    The school recognizes this as an integrated part of the education system and provides ample space, exposure and encouragement to students to pursue the game of his/her choice. The school boasts of a fire foot ball ground, one of the best basket ball court and also has net facilities for aspiring cricket players. The physical education room stocks an assortment of equipment required for various games.

    Counseling
    The school has a qualified academic and behavioral pediatrician Dr. Yamuna. Counselor who holds counseling sessions for required children and with the help of teachers makes the personality profile of students referred to her and shares and discusses it with the parents.
    Dr. Yamuna is available for meeting and consultation at our school on tuesdays and wednesdays between 8.45 and 10.00 a.m. Consultation can be arranged only by prior appointment. For appointment contact school office.

    Online Report Card
    The online report card was introduced in the academic year (2013 - 2014). Parents can view their wards performance online. A printed copy of the marks scored by the child is also available for record.
